Basic Information

1.1. Basic Information

Hello and welcome. Let's begin our journey into the world of Asterisk.

Before we can start, make sure you have the following:

1. Computer with installed Linux OS
2. Asterisk's installation packages
3. Some free time to spend ;o)
4. An IQ higher than the freezing point of water (in Celsius)

1. Computer with installed Linux OS

In this tutorial, we do not discuss Linux installation on your machine. However, we will show you how to install an Asterisk PBX system on a previously installed Linux PC.

You must install these packages before proceeding with the installation of Asterisk.

* Linux 2.4 kernel sources or kernel 2.6 header files. (for libpri)
* bison and bison-devel packages (This is used to build Asterisk)
* ncurses and ncurses-devel packages (Used to build astman, etc.)
* zlib and zlib-devel packages
* openssl and openssl-devel packages

2. Asterisk's Installation Packages

The following packages are needed to install Asterisk: libpri, zaptel and of course Asterisk.

There are three ways to obtain these files:
2.1. Directly download tarball files:

2.1.1. Stable Version 1.2.4

Asterisk 1.2.4
Zaptel 1.2.4
Libpri 1.2.2

You can also download these additional packages for Asterisk:
Asterisk-sounds 1.2.1 - Additional sound prompts
Asterisk-addons 1.2.1 - Additional modules

2.1.2. Old Stable Version 1.0.10

Asterisk 1.0.10
Zaptel 1.0.10
Libpri 1.0.9

You can also download these additional packages for Asterisk:
Asterisk-sounds 1.0.9 - Additional sound prompts
Asterisk-addons 1.0.9 - Additional modules

2.1.3 Latest CVS Head Version

To download the latest CVS head version, follow this link, and download the files with the most recent date.

2.2. Get a copy from the CVS server

To get a fresh copy from the CVS server use these commands:

# cd /usr/src
#mkdir asterisk
# export CVSROOT=:pserver:anoncvs@cvs.digium.com:/usr/cvsroot
# cvs login

The password is anoncvs. Now you can choose which version of Asterisk to download: Stable Version or CVS Head Version.

2.2.1. Stable Version 1.2.0

To get the stable version use this command:

# cvs checkout -r v1-2-0 zaptel libpri asterisk

If you like, you can download additional items like sounds and other addons. To do this, add the next words(items) at the end of the command line:

asterisk-addons asterisk-sounds

asterisk-addons - Contains addon for MySQLsupport
asterisk-sounds - Additional sound prompts

2.2.2. Stable Version 1.0.9

To get the 1.0.9 stable version use this command:

# cvs checkout -r v1-0 zaptel libpri asterisk

2.2.3 Latest CVS Head Version

To get the latest CVS head version use this command:

# cvs checkout zaptel libpri asterisk

2.3. Obtain from a SVN server:

Do not forget that you need to have an installed SVN package. Use the following command:

# apt-get install subversion

2.3.1. Stable Version 1.2.0

To get the stable version use the following commands:

# svn checkout http://svn.digium.com/svn/asterisk/branches/1.2 asterisk-1.2
# svn checkout http://svn.digium.com/svn/zaptel/branches/1.2 zaptel-1.2
# svn checkout http://svn.digium.com/svn/libpri/branches/1.2 libpri-1.2

2.3.2. Latest CVS Head Version

To get the latest CVS head version use this command:

# svn checkout http://svn.digium.com/svn/asterisk/trunk asterisk
# svn checkout http://svn.digium.com/svn/zaptel/trunk zaptel
# svn checkout http://svn.digium.com/svn/libpri/trunk libpri

Hi all

I have registered to asterisk 1.2.6 and Not able to send Subscribe to other user who is also registered to asterisk 1.2.6.

I am getting error like

ERROR[28985] : chan_sip.c:10284 handle_request_subscribe:Got SUBSCRIBE for extensions without hint.please add hint to c in context default

is there any problem with asterisk 1.2.6
i am able to subscribe with asterisk 1.0.6

I have the Generic X100P card, it is not supported but I have found information that says it can be used for the PBX. How do I set it up if its not supported? How to configure that card? After fit this card into CPU, how can we know It is connecting to asterisk.

hello

i want to try this Asterisk PABX System on my debian 3.1 (sarge)
i try to use CVS for downloading, i follow these steps
from the mostly recommended by experienced user

1."apt-get build-dep asterisk"
2."apt-get install kernel-headers-2.4.27-2-386"
3. "apt-get install graphviz"
4."cd /usr/src
5. "export CVSROOT=:pserver:anoncvs@cvs.digium.com:/usr/cvsroot"
6. "cvs login (the password is anoncvs - if you get an error just type this again)"

i did this super user (su) mode but after typing the pass word
"anoncvs" i got a long time and after how many minutes it
says "request aborted" or "request time out" something like that
i did it again and again.

so i tried to install with tar.gz version (i downloaded
asterisk-1.2.1 and asterisk-1.2.2) but when i "make"
i received this last 3 lines (error )
"make[1]: *** [chan_zap.o] Error 1"
"make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/asterisk-1.2.2/channels'"
"make: *** [subdirs] Error 1"

I'm new to Asterisk and trying to use it. But i don't know the relationship between asterisk, zaptel and libpri. More general, i want to know the architecture of Asterisk from technical view (not business view), i.e how much library it does has and others additional libs.

One thing missing from many tutorials is how to actualy build-out the physical infrastructure, and suggestions for moderately priced phones. Loots of searching required I guess.

I have the Generic X100P card, it is not supported but I have found information that says it can be used for the PBX. How do I set it up if its not supported?
